Frequently Asked Questions

What is a feelings wheel?

The Feeling Wheel is a tool designed to help people recognize and communicate how they feel. It consists of an inner circle with 7 sectors and two outer circles. The sectors are each labeled with the name of a primary feeling. The outer rings contain names of secondary feelings related to the primary ones. The feelings wheel is also referred to as the wheel of emotions.

Who can benefit from the wheel of emotions?

This feelings wheel is great for anyone who wants to expand their emotional wellbeing. It's perfect for those in therapy, including CBT, DBT, ACT, and other modalities. It's also an invaluable resource for therapists and therapists-in-training. Many couples use this to improve their communication and interpersonal relationships.

How do I use the feelings wheel?

The Feeling Wheel is highly versatile, allowing for various applications. There's no strict rule on how to use it, so feel free to adopt an approach that suits you best. Many individuals struggle with articulating their emotions, and the Feeling Wheel serves as a valuable tool to refine and accurately express feelings. Begin by identifying the basic emotion in the innermost ring and then explore outward to see if additional emotions resonate. Keep in mind that the wheel is a guide, not an exhaustive list of all possible emotions.

How is your feelings wheel different?

My Feelings Wheel stands out from others due to its modern and comprehensive approach. While many emotion wheels are based on Dr. Gloria Willcox's original wheel from the 1980s, which contains 72 feelings, I identified a need for a more expansive and up-to-date resource.

As a result, I meticulously designed this updated Feelings Wheel with an enhanced and comprehensive list of 130 emotions. It provides a more nuanced and relevant guide for exploring the intricate landscape of feelings and emotions. Additionally, it boasts a vibrant and colorful gradient, providing a secondary mechanism for delving into emotions through color exploration.

Who invented the feelings wheel?

The original feelings wheel was designed by Dr. Gloria Willcox in 1982. The idea was inspired by Joseph Zinker’s view of the therapist as an artist and Robert Plutchik’s comparison of emotions to colors. Over the years, researchers and therapists have adapted the wheel for their own uses, so you'll find different versions floating around online. I designed mine to include a comprehensive list of 130 unique emotions.

What types of therapy is the feelings wheel useful for?

This feelings wheel is helpful in all types of therapy. Individuals can use this in traditional 1:1 talk therapy to communicate their feelings. It's a perfect tool for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Specifically for the Emotion Regulation module which teaches skills to actively manage emotions, reduce vulnerability to negativity, and cultivate positive experiences.
